Color: Deep, rich, even violet is desired. Avoid moderate to significant color zoning.

Clarity: Avoid any but the most minute crystal inclusions, no cracks or cloudy quality. Cleaner is better for Saturn gems.

Shape: Oval, cushion, emerald cut, round.

Size: Four carats or larger

Avoid Enhancements: The Garuda Purana states that heated Blue Sapphires are very bad for the wearer. Amethyst, a Saturn stone, should also be unheated.
